Renaissance Motets: Sightreading Workshop for Small Ensembles

    Next class:TBD

Simona Nass and Paul Kim bring their passion, knowledge, and vast collection of Renaissance Motets to a workshop designed to help singers get the most out of their sightreading skills. Singers will have the opportunity to sing one on a part in small ensembles formed based on individual experience.

Simona Nass has been singing choral music since elementary school, including participating in recordings with Cantori/New York and the Renaissance Street Singers. However, she is primarily known for being a Renaissance motet sight-singing obsessionist. After sight-singing Renaissance motets for over a decade, she started hosting Renaissance motet sight sings in 2005, gathering a different set of 4-8 singers several times a month. Nearly 200 singers have participated, ranging from professional singers with strong sight-singing skills to less advanced community chorus members.

Paul Kim is an SFSU Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and is currently pursuing his Master of Music in Choral Conducting with Josh Haberman, also at SFSU. He is the director of the International Orange Chorale (www.iocsf.org), the San Francisco State University Women's Chorus, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and was a member of RoShamBo, a professional a cappella jazz/pop sextet.

Founded by Moshe Feldenkrais, the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education offers a means for discovering new approaches, new movements, and new ways of sensing ourselves. In Awareness Through Movement lessons participants are guided through a series of structured, gentle and innovative sequences which highlight the relationship between the bones, joints, and muscle groups of the body.

For the string player or the brass player who would like to find more comfort in sitting and playing or the singer who seeks more ease in standing and holding music, these classes will be of benefit in the following ways:
    - Increased Mobility of the Head, Neck, and Shoulders
    - Greater Flexibility in the Back
    - The Dynamics of Posture in Standing and Sitting
The Relationship between Breathing and Posture

Come and enjoy this opportunity to move and create and explore your possibilities for movement. Dress comfortably. Mats are provided or you may choose to bring your own. To enhance your process of learning, we invite you to consider taking this intensive weekend workshop in conjunction with the weekly Ready Set Sing workshop!

Singer and Feldenkrais Practitioner, Karen Clark, has presented workshops for musicians throughout the U.S. Her essay, The Impulse to Sing, is published in the Feldenkrais Journal. Karen is Lecturer in Voice at Sonoma State University.
